When you’re hit with writer’s block, you’re advised to write about it
To say how you're feeling
To explore what within your subconscious is preventing you from creating something beautiful; from creating something at all.
I swore that I would write to you every week. Unfortunately, for the past week I have had nothing to explore here, nothing to write about, nothing to create.
Even as I write this I feel the results will turn out shitty, but that’s okay. I don’t mind it.
I'll talk about some other aspects of my life instead
Nothing productive or growth related…
Just about me, in some kind of raw form.
Did you know I love a good movie/series/anime??
Basically I love a good story
And you may wonder, what are the standards that Dave uses to categorize a good story.
Well, I’ll tell you…
The most important thing for me is that it’s well-written.
A lot of stories in this world have potential, flair and an overpriced budget with a dumb plot based on the power of family
But the ones I'm really into have to be well written, and well executed.
They must leave me with the feeling that I can watch them again and again if need be.
One of such stories is The Good Doctor
It’s about a doctor on the autism spectrum who’s really smart at being a surgeon but has terrible social skills, and now he must learn them in order to survive in this world
Sounds like basic shit yes??
Yes.
I didn’t even want to watch it before
But i’m a patient man, i like to give a few things a try
So I sat with, saw it
And now 5 years later it's still the best medical written show i’ve ever seen in my life.
The way the writers explore the characters, their development, social themes, societal issues etc.
It’s phenomenal.
I’m not good at giving reviews so instead i’ll just leave 5 tv series I believe you should see before you get married and lose your freedom.
These stories are not full of fluff, they develop nicely and the story doesn't run in circles.
This is the least i can do since my brain has refused to create something more interesting.
I just believe in showing up, and show up is what i’m doing.
Enjoy:
5: The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel
Comedy. Set in the 50s, gives you insight into how comics write, plus some of the issues women faced. And it's really funny.
4: Good Trouble
Drama. All the characters share a commune living space, this means they share the same toilet and bathroom.
They have very different lives in very different worlds and the writers do an awesome job of showing us how people in these situations navigate the challenges in their lives that are unique to them. Want to understand some lgbtq problems better, this show has that. The issues black people face in America but without any of the self-righteous undertone… this is the show you should see.
3: Fleabag
Comedy. The most beautiful shit god has created in english television. Written by the amazing Phoebe Waller-Bridge, creator of Killing Eve (another show you should definitely see before you have sex.)
2: Peaky Blinders
If you haven't seen it; you're making a wrong life choice.
1: Billions
It’s clearly about money and power. But what's so beautiful about this show is there are no good or bad guys, just humans who make decisions for their own survival. And tbh, this is not a good description of this series.
But here’s what you should understand, if you're a person who's really interested in how money moves the world, the role of economics and politics, why relationships (networking) is important for rich people, dark psychology, game theory and a whole fucking lot more, then you should see this series. You’ll learn a lot.
I obviously didn't mention The Good Doctor because I had already mentioned before. And if it isn’t obvious that you should go see that as well, then maybe you’re just as blocked as I am.
That’s it for today.
This is not what you’re used to but I applaud me for showing up.
I’m sure there will be grammatical errors but who gives a shit.
Thank you for being patient with me, and being a faithful reader.
Until next week,
Stay easy,
Dave.
